Doug Jones tweets support for CNN’s Jim Acosta amid battle with Trump

Alabama Sen. Doug Jones is sending his support to CNN correspondent Jim Acosta amid a battle with the White House.

Jones, D-Birmingham, said “Freedom of the press was considered by our founding fathers of such importance that they made it 1st. In America, we should not only applaud the tough questions- but strive to answer them honestly (and) ensure the press is able to keep power in check. Without exception,” he wrote, adding the hashtag #Acosta.

The White House suspended Acosta’s press pass this week after he sparred with President Trump over questions related to the caravan of migrants headed to the southern U.S. border. During the press conference ,a female White House aid tried to take the microphone from Acosta but was unsuccessful and the White House responded with removing his credentials.

In a statement, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Acosta’s actions were “absolutely unacceptable.”

“President Trump believes in a free press and expects and welcomes tough questions of him and his Administration. We will, however, never tolerate a reporter placing his hands on a young woman just trying to do her job as a White House intern,” Sanders said.

Acosta and CNN responded.
